Positano is the kind of place that steals your heart the moment you arrive. Nestled along Italy’s Amalfi Coast, this cliffside village is a postcard-perfect destination with pastel-colored buildings, winding streets, and jaw-dropping sea views. As a wedding photographer and travel enthusiast, I’ve had the privilege of capturing its magic while also soaking in its charm. Whether you’re here for a romantic getaway, a solo adventure, or a dreamy photoshoot, here’s your ultimate guide to experiencing Positano like a pro!
Things to Do in Positano
1. Spend a full day at the beach in Marina Grande or Spiaggia del Fornillo.
Positano is famous for its beaches, and you have two great options:
Spiaggia Grande – The main beach, buzzing with energy and lined with restaurants and bars.
Spiaggia del Fornillo – A quieter, just-as-gorgeous alternative with beachfront dining options.
Spend the day sunbathing, swimming, and sipping on a refreshing limoncello spritz while admiring the view of Positano’s colorful cliffside houses.
2. Take a private boat trip with aperitivo and admire the coastline.
For a truly magical experience, book a private sunset boat tour right from the beach. As the day winds down, sail along the Amalfi Coast while sipping wine and watching the sky transform into hues of pink and gold. Stop for a swim in hidden coves, soak in the beauty of the cliffs, and enjoy the most romantic and peaceful time on the water.
3. Enjoy lunch or dinner with a view at Terrazza Cele.
Terrazza Cele is one of Positano’s most romantic dining spots, offering breathtaking views of the Amalfi Coast. Located within the charming Hotel Marincanto, this restaurant combines elegant ambiance with exquisite Mediterranean cuisine.
4. Shop for ceramics, linens, and handmade sandals and famous fruit stand.
Positano is a shopper’s paradise! Be sure to check out:
Custom-made sandals – Many shops will design and fit them to your foot.
Hand-painted ceramics – Local pottery shops offer stunning, one-of-a-kind pieces (and they ship internationally!). Some shops don’t allow photos, but there’s a stunning open-air pottery display near Via Trara Genoino.
Linen fashion at Pepito’s – Perfect for breezy coastal vibes.
Fruit Stand – The best fruit stand is along the Amalfi Coast Drive near Il San Pietro di Positano. Be prepared to tip the fruit stand’s owner for taking pictures, or better yet, buy some fresh fruit.
5. Wander through the charming streets of Positano.
Positano’s picturesque streets are a delight to explore. The town’s steep, winding pathways are lined with boutique shops, artisan stores, and cozy cafes, each offering a unique slice of the Amalfi Coast’s charm. As you stroll, take in the vibrant bougainvillea cascading from balconies, the pastel-colored buildings stacked along the cliffs, and the occasional hidden alley leading to breathtaking sea views. Remember that strolling in Positano requires being physically well-prepared, as the town is situated on a hill with streets that go up and down. Make sure to wear comfortable shoes.
6. Rent a vintage car with a driver or a scooter and explore the Amalfi Coast.
For a stylish way to experience the Amalfi Coast—just like in old Italian movies—rent a vintage car or a classic Vespa and take a scenic drive along the famous coastal road. The winding route offers dramatic sea views, cliffside villages, and countless photo opportunities. Drive through neighboring towns like Praiano and Amalfi, each with its own unique charm. Don't forget to take pictures or hire a photographer!
7. Hike the Path of the Gods (Sentiero Degli Dei)
For breathtaking views, lace up your hiking boots and take on the Sentiero Degli Dei. This trail connects Agerola to Nocelle and offers some of the most spectacular scenery on the Amalfi Coast. If you love nature and don’t mind a bit of a challenge, this is an absolute must!
8. Sip cocktails at Franco’s Bar or Aldo’s Grill Bar.
When the sun starts to dip, head over to Franco’s Bar for an unforgettable golden hour experience. The bar opens at 5 p.m., but there’s always a line, so arrive by 4:45 to snag a great spot. Everything here is Instagram-worthy, from the lemon trees to the blue-and-white striped awnings. Their Aperol Spritz is a personal favorite, and the complimentary olives? Some of the best I’ve ever had!
9. Start Your Day with a Boat Ride to Da Adolfo
One of the best ways to kick off your Positano adventure is by hopping on the free boat with the red fish from the port at 11 a.m. to Da Adolfo Restaurant. This little beachside spot is just 15 minutes away by boat, offering an intimate escape from the bustling town. Be sure to book your spot ahead of time—your hotel concierge can help with reservations. Rent a lounge chair, bask in the sun, and then indulge in a fresh seafood lunch before catching the return boat around 4 p.m.
10. Visit Fiordo di Furore for a beach day.
For a secluded beach experience, head to Fiordo di Furore, a picturesque fjord along the Amalfi coastline. This spot feels hidden and untouched, making it a perfect escape from the more crowded beaches. Be aware that the parking places are very limited, I suggest to reach it by taxi or by bus.
11. Take a day trip to Ravello, Amalfi, Sorrento, or Capri.
Exploring beyond Positano is a must! Each of these destinations offers something unique:
Ravello – A stunning hilltop town with breathtaking views and romantic gardens. Visit Villa Rufolo and Villa Ciambrone’s gardens, enjoy a delicious meal at Villa Maria’s, and sip a cocktail at Palazzo Avino’s terrace while admiring the scenery.
Amalfi – A historic town with a vibrant atmosphere, featuring the stunning Duomo di Amalfi and charming streets lined with shops and caffes. Be sure to grab a lemon granita from one of the local vendors!
Sorrento – Known for its stunning coastal views and delicious limoncello, Sorrento is a great place to shop for souvenirs and enjoy fresh seafood by the water.
Capri – Take a ferry to this glamorous island and explore the Blue Grotto, ride the chairlift up to Monte Solaro, and stroll through Piazzetta.
12. Book a honeymoon, engagement or a wedding photoshoot with photographer to preserve your memories from this special place. Reach me out here!

Things you need to know before you book a trip to Positano
1. Driving in Positano is a nightmare – There’s only one narrow, one-way road around the town. If you miss a parking spot, you could be stuck doing a 30–40 minute loop. Parking is expensive – If you’re driving, be prepared to pay €12 per hour for parking. Gas stations are scarce – Positano has only two gas stations, and one is often closed. The next nearest station is an hour away in heavy traffic. Fuel up before arriving or better don't drive there at all.
2. Use the ferry to move between the towns of the Amalfi Coast. It is well-connected, affordable, and the fastest way to travel from Positano to Ravello, Amalfi, Sorrento, or Capri. However, in July and August, it is usually overcrowded.
3. Positano is expensive. Be prepared to pay at least 300-400€ per night for a simple bed & breakfast. Luxury hotel experiences start from 500-1000€ per night.
4. Book in advance – Activities and restaurants fill up quickly, especially from June to August.
Positano is more than just a destination—it’s an experience. Whether you’re exploring the cliffside streets, enjoying a sunset spritz, or cruising along the coast, every moment here feels straight out of a dream. If you’re planning a trip, I promise Positano will steal your heart, just like it did mine!
